The pride and talents of CCCians were, once again, lifted up as athlete Carl Angelo C. Gongora, Grade 12 student of ABM B Our Lady of Grace, took home a bronze medal in the decathlon event of Ayala Philippine Athletics Championship (APAC), held last March 6 to 8 at the City of Iligan Sports Complex, Isabela.

Different athletes all over the country participated in the event, including Gongora, who powered through the third place in the decathlon, just behind the athletes of the prestigious universities of Ateneo and University of the East.

(All I can say about my victory is that it is a big blessing from God, because He was the only one I approached during that time, hoping that I would be able to finish the event, even without a medal, because I know that I wouldn’t win [in the event].)

Gongora’s preparation through strict diet and training was also one of the reasons behind his great victory. After all, decathlon is not an easy task. It is composed of ten disciplines of track and field, or athletics, which is 100m dash, 400m dash, 1500m run, 110m hurdles, long jump, high jump, shot put, discus throw, pole vault, and javelin throw.

Syempre, strict diet, dahil from sprints, nag-convert ako sa event na ito. So kailangan ko mag-gain ng muscle mass and weight para ma-endure lahat ng event na iyon nang hindi nawawala ang athletic ability, kaya araw-araw din ako nagtraining after class, kasama na dun yung weight training.

(Of course, strict diet, because from sprints, I converted to this event. That means I must gain muscle mass and weight so I could endure all those events without losing my athletic ability, which is why I train after class everyday, which also includes my weight training.)

Gongora also expressed his warm gratitude to God and to those who supported him all throughout the competition, including his coaches and trainers, Mr. Jude Gayares of FPFMNHS, Alex Garcia, and Ms. Tin Teodoro, as well as his supportive parents and those who helped his team financially in their travel to Isabela.

The said victory also inspired him in his career.

(I became more motivated to continue my athletic career, and of course, I am still overwhelmed by the results, and I still cannot believe it because this is my first medal in a higher meet, and I got it from a national competition, too.)

(All you need to do is pray and do what you need to do in order to achieve the things that you want.)

The event was also participated in by two other CCCians: Emmanuel Garcia, Grade 12 student of HELE - Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, and Charm Joy Seguis, Grade 10 student of St. Benedict. Jose Angelo Villafuerte | Regina Lucis High School
